Municipal Libraries

The Câmara Municipal de Cascais (Municipal Council of Cascais) has three municipal libraries.

Biblioteca Municipal de Cascais (Cascais Municipal Library) - Casa da Horta da Quinta de Santa Clara
Biblioteca Municipal de Cascais (Cascais Municipal Library) - São Domingos de Rana
Biblioteca Municipal de Cascais - Infantil e Juvenil (Cascais Municipal Library - Children and Youths)

They all belong to the National Library of Public Reading Network.

The Catalogue of the Cascais Municipal Libraries (only available in portuguese) is accessible via the internet and through it, all those who are interested, may search to see if the titles or authors are included in the collection. Registered readers are given the possibility of managing their personal data, make reservations and suggestions for the acquisition of titles. If you are not yet a reader, further below you can see what you need to do to get your Reader's Card and have all the services provided by the Cascais Municipal Libraries available to you.

With a dynamic programming dedicated to the promotion of books and reading, and the constant concern to renew and update their collections, the Cascais Municipal Libraries are constantly looking to provide more means to their users, and in the near future, the implementation of the Cascais Digital Library will be implemented, which looks to provide a wider audience with a vast set of documents of recognised interest and with particular interest for the study and knowledge of the county.

Among its responsibilities, there is also the management of the local network of School Libraries which already has 28 facilities integrated in the county schools, namely two Toy Libraries, spaces which are characterised by being open to the non-school community.

In addition to the Municipal Libraries, the Câmara Municipal de Cascais (Municipal Council of Cascais) also has a set of specialised libraries and documentation centres such as: Espaço Memória dos Exílios (Memorial Space of the Exiles), Casa Reynaldo dos Santos (Reynaldo dos Santos House), Museu da Música Portuguesa (Museum of Portuguese Music) and Museu do Mar - Rei D. Carlos (Museum of the Sea - King Carlos I). Also in this scope, we highlight the specific collection of the Count of Castro Guimarães, which was originally at the base of the estate of the first public library formed in the county of Cascais (1931), from the worthy heritage of Manuel de Castro Guimarães. Today, this prestigious collection can be found at its original address, today known as Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães (Counts of Castro Guimarães Museum), which can be visited upon the booking of a reservation.
